Jacob was a man of great guile (treacherous cunning and skillful deceit). Yet, Jacob was the one through whom God chose to continue His Abahamic covenant blessing. While the deceiver was on the run, God appeared to him standing beside a ladder extending from heaven to earth with angels ascending and descending. This incident is another portrait of the coming Messiah acclaimed by Christ Himself in His discourse with Nathaniel. Jesus declared that He was the ladder, just as He would declare later that He was the only Way to the Father.
