The Old Testament word for love (ahav) referred to a passionate affection that one would choose to have for someone else. The New Testament equivalent (agape) refers to a committed, self-giving love. It is this type of love that God demonstrated for us. He chose to place His affection on us and to give selflessly to meet our need.
