* We have studying John's presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As we have noted, John's major purpose is to undergird the unity of the church through the presentation of the proof that Jesus is the Son of God. * In each of previous three messages from chapter 1, we have seen how John clearly interweaves either direct, or indirect, references to the deity of Christ. * John's presentation of the gospel is slightly different from that of Matthew, Mark and Luke ... in that his primary focus is not in the chronological presentation of Jesus' ministry. Rather, again, John's goal is to provide proof that Jesus was the Son of God who was incarnate in order to become the Lamb of God ... in order to take away the sin of the world! * In our passage today, we are presented with another means in which John is proclaiming the deity of Christ - through signs or miracles. First, we need to consider the identification and purpose of these signs, and then look at the application of the events surrounding the demonstration of the first sign and the declaration of the final sign. |
