Paul's first epistle (letter) to the church of Corinth was written in order to assist them in dealing with various issues with which they were struggling. Living in a hedonistic, licentious society can have an affect upon the "set-apartness" of the individual believer and gathering of believers. Paul has just spent a great portion of his epistle discussing the subject of Christian Liberty and culminated it with the commands to glorify God in everything we do and to not give an offense to others which could hinder them from coming to Christ, or drawing closer to Him. At the beginning of chapter 11, Paul begins examining three separate subject areas: Headship, Communion and Spiritual Gifts. Last week, we considered the subject of headship; today, we shall examine the subject of the Lord's Supper.
