Paul's first epistle (letter) to the church of Corinth was written in order to assist them in dealing with various issues with which they were struggling. Living in a hedonistic, licentious society can have an affect upon the "set-apartness" of the individual believer and gathering of believers.
Paul has just spent a great portion of his epistle discussing the subject of Christian Liberty and culminated it with the commands to glorify God in everything we do and to not give an offense to others which could hinder them from coming to Christ, or drawing closer to Him. Paul transitions further into the considerations of surrendering our "rights" while seeking the glory of God and edification of others by examining three separate subject areas: Headship, Communion and Spiritual Gifts. In this discussion of Headship we see again the conflicting influences of the Jewish and Grecian cultural backgrounds of these new believers.
