Jacob's WagesUncle Laban had given Jacob his two daughters to be the brides of Jacob. This generosity came with a price ... fourteen years of labor. At the end of those fourteen years, Laban agreed to pay Jacob but changed the conditions of his wages numerous times. Each time, Jacob match the chicanery and roguery of Laban with his own special brand. Finally, after 21 years of living with Laban, Jacob decides to begin heading back to his own homeland. Unsurprisingly, this is performed through deception and matched with equal zeal by Laban as he pursues after Jacob and his daughters. In the midst of this seemingly out of control situation, we see the faithfulness of God as He appears to Laban in a dream in order to warn him not to harm Jacob. Our God is faithful even when we are not! Sun, 30 December 2012

Deceiving the DeceiverGod truly works in ways beyond our comprehension. He can take our sinful acts and still cause His will to prevail. Through the battle of deception between Laban and Jacob, God fulfills His promise to Abraham and Isaac regarding the multiplation of their seed. Yet, the deception of Laban and Jacob also reveal other unrighteous attributes of the natural man as Jacob deals with the struggles of polygamy. These struggles apply not only to simultaneous polygamy but to sequential polygamy as well. Sun, 23 December 2012

Jacob's DreamJacob is one of the primary patriarchs of Israel. The Israelites referred to God as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. As God had appeared to his grandfather and father, so He now presents Himself to Jacob. The grace of God extended to a sinner is truly the greatest marvel known to man. Jesus refers to this passage as He speaks to Nathaniel many years later declaring that He Himself is the fulfillment of the ladder of which Jacob dreamed. Later Jesus would declare: I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through Me. Sun, 16 December 2012

The Dysfunctional FamilyGenesis, the book of beginnings, is the foundation for much of what we believe. Truly it is the beginning of the whole counsel of God! This message considers the account of a family that consists of a permissive father, a controlling mother, a worldly older son and a deceptive younger son. Does that sound too familiar? The dysfunctional label has been applied to many different relationships in the last couple of decades. However, if we are honest we will recognize that each family has areas in which their functionality needs a little help. Praise God that He provides us the remedy for the dysfunctional family in His Word ... if we would truly apply to our lives. But this will require humility and determination in our recognition, repentance and reconstruction. Sun, 09 December 2012

Isaac and AbimelechThe sins of the father, as a generality, are passed down to the son. It was no different between Abraham and Isaac. As Abraham had stumbled with the King of Gerar, so his son follows in his footsteps. As God revealed His faithfulness in the days of Abraham, He once again reveals His faithfulness to His promise through His provision and protection. Sun, 02 December 2012

Jacob and EsauThe account of the birth of Esau and Jacob brings us to a consideration of some great theological debates; especially, as we recall Malachi 1:1-3 and Romans 9:10-15. The primary difficulty is the question of predestination. In this message we consider the birth record and the birthright of Esau and Jacob.Sun, 25 November 2012

Finding RebekahAbraham was old and God had provided the promised Son, Isaac. It was time for Isaac to have a spouse. To accomplish this task, Abraham sent his trusted servant Eleazar to find Isaac a bride from his family at Nahor. Abraham was confident in the provision of God because Abraham was confident in the promise of God. The Word of God does not fail. When we consider the faith of Abraham in the promise of God it should challenge us in our faith in consideration of all of the promises that God has for us in His Word. If that is not inspirational enough, consider the faith of Eleazar who submitted to the faith of his master, traveled to Nahor, and called upon the God of his master to fulfill His promise of provision! May God allow us to be so faithful. Sun, 18 November 2012

Abraham's TestGod had promised Abraham that in him, and his seed, all of the nations of the world would be blessed. He had also promised that the seed would be a child who would be from Sarah. Sarah then gave birth to Isaac. That birth was miraculous. But now God was asking Abraham to do something that has to be one of the greatest tests of faith recorded. Abraham displayed his fear of God and his faith in God as he took his son Isaac to Mt. Moriah, to offer him there as a sacrifice to God in obedience to the challenge of God. This test was to demonstrate the greatness of the love of God for you and I. For God so loved the world (you and I) that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever would believe in Him would not perish but have everlasting life! Sun, 11 November 2012

The Protection and Provision of GodGod appeared to Abraham by the terebinth trees of Mamre and promised that, within a year, Sarah would have a son. However, during the ensuing year, Abraham traveled to Gerar where he repeats his failure from Egypt and almost jeopardizes the plan of God. God speaks to Abimelech in a dream and warns him not to touch Sarah. God protected His chosen vessels and His ordained plan. Sarah then gives birth to Isaac fulfilling the promise that God had made to Abram 25 years earlier. In time, Sarah becomes at odds with Hagar and calls upon Abraham to send away Hagar and her son by Abraham, Ishmael. God uses the symbolism of this division between Sarah and Hagar in the New Testament to discuss the profit, purpose, and path of Christian liberty. Sun, 04 November 2012

Lessons from LotWhen Abram left his family and country to follow the call of God, his nephew Lot chose to travel with him. As they dwelled in Canaan and experienced the blessing of God upon their lives and possessions, new challenges faced Abram and Lot. The land where they had settled could not yet support both the herds of Abram and the herds of Lot. As is sadly the case in many churches, dissension ensued. The herdsmen of Lot and the herdsmen of Abram began to fight. Abram offers Lot the choice to move or stay. Lot, motivated by faulty and selfish logic, chooses to move his household to the plain near Sodom. This choice led to many unhappy consequences. Yet, the Scriptures record in the second epistle of Peter that Lot was a righteous man. As a result of considering the life of Lot, we must ask ourselves, "what are my primary determiners for decision making?" Sun, 28 October 2012

By the Terebinth TreesOne of the greatest accounts of the interaction of God with man occurred by the terebinth trees of Mamre. Abraham sees three strangers, ministers to their needs, and then realizes that one of the three is YHWH Himself ... God incarnate! During this meeting, YHWH declared to Abraham that Sarah would have a child. In this account we see many lessons regarding the attributes of God and importance of hospitality. Sun, 21 October 2012

The Abrahamic CovenantAs God has worked through various individuals throughout history, so He has related to human beings in different manners during different dispensations under different covenants. When God called Abram from his home, He gave Abram a promise. Later God would take that promise and seal it into an everlasting covenant while giving Abram a new name, Abraham. The consummation and consequence of the covenant of God with Abraham has profound application to the lives of believers who a part of the New covenant. The covenant must be accepted by the recipient. The covenant must be seal with a blood sacrifice. The covenant would be accompanied by a seal, or sign. We are told that Abraham believed YHWH and YHWH accounted it to him for righteousness. In this covenant with Abraham, we see the soteriological plan of God being developed further ... salvation would be by the grace of God through faith, not by works! Sun, 14 October 2012

The Call of AbramThrough the description of history, as recorded in the Scriptures, God has chosen to work through various individuals at various times. One of those individuals God chose to use was Abram. God called to Abram to leave his country, his family, and his religious heritage. God promised that he would lead Abram to a special country and make of him a great nation. Abram believed God and heeded His voice. Yet Abram, being yet young in his faith, failed at times to keep his focus on God during the ensuing hard times. We, as well, must be faithful to answer the call of God and to trust that He is faithful not to allow us to be tempted, or tried, beyond what we are able to bear. Our faith is strengthened when we undergo times when we must trust God against the backdrop of the circumstances in life. Sun, 07 October 2012

The Tower of BabelWhen man got off the ark, God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth." However, man chose to rebel against God stating, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower who top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth." So, God divided man linguistically and geographically. This account of the Towel of Babel also has prophetic significance. It is from this site that we see the origins of Babylon which is the foretype of the World Empire that will reign during the end times. The consideration of the mentality of these people not far removed from the time of the flood, while survivors of the flood still remained, forces us to consider our own attitudes towards heeding the will of God and investing in His Kingdom and not that of the world. The Noahic CovenantEvery time we see a rainbow in the sky, it is a reminder to us of the faithfulness of God to fulfill His covenants. After God destroyed the earth with a flood, saving only Noah, his three sons, and each of their wives, God made a promise to Noah and all of the earth that He would never again destroy it with a flood. He then stated that He would put a rainbow in the clouds as a sign of that covenant. God is true to His covenants. He is not a man that He should lie. What He has spoken He will maintain. So it is with the New Covenant that He purchased through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Just as the days of Noah are used as a analogy of the end times, so the continual fulfillment of this Noahic Covenant is a reminder of His faithfulness to keep all His promises. Noah and the FloodOne of the saddest verses in Scripture: "YHWH saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent (to mold or form) of the thoughts (purpose, plan, plot, strategizing) of his heart was only evil continually." (Genesis 6:5) Man turned away from God and God finally had to judge man. Yet in the midst of this tragedy the grace of God shines, "But Noah found grace in the eyes of YHWH." In this message we look both at the heritage, call and faithfulness of Noah ... and the cause, scope and prophetic import of the flood. Sun, 16 September 2012

Cain and AbelIn Genesis 4 we see the sad continuance of sin in the second generation. Apparently, God had instituted a sacrificial system where a firstfruit offering was to be brought. Abel brought the choicest part of the firstborn of the flock; Cain brought "some of" the fruit of the ground. Though some interpret Cain's sin as not having a blood sacrifice, the Hebrew text does not confirm that interpretation. Rather, the offering that they brought was a minchah (a general offering, used of the grain offerings in Leviticus), not an olah (something given wholly over to destruction, used of sin sacrifices and burnt offerings) or ishah (that which is sacrificed by fire). God admonished Cain and warned him about the sin that was lurking at the door. God told him that he must master the sin or it would consume him. Cain rejected God's counsel, slew his brother and was banished from dwelling with the rest of his family. Sun, 09 September 2012

The BeattitudesThe initial sermon of Jesus, the Sermon on the Mount, is recorded beginning in chapter 5 of the book of Matthew. The beginning of that sermon is a section known as the Beattitudes. Those this portion of scripture is hard to understand and many times misinterpretted and misused, it is one of the greatest portions of Scripture and worthy of our study and consideration. Devon Harris uses both the Old Testament and New Testament to shed some light on this explosive message of Christ. Presented by Devon Harris.Sun, 02 September 2012

The Fall of ManWhen God created Adam, He placed him in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it. Additionally, God told Adam that he could eat from any tree in the garden except for the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God stated that on the day that Adam ate from that tree he would die. In Genesis 3 we see Adam and Eve choose to disregard the admonition of the LORD, listening to the deception of Satan (appearing in the form of the serpent), casting themselves and the rest of humanity in a struggle against sin.Sun, 26 August 2012

The Origin of ManGenesis chapter two is a breakout of the sixth day of God's creation. Along with verses 26 through 30 of Chapter One this chapter reveals the origin of man. God's Word very clearly states that man was created in the image and likeness of God and with the breath of life. Man as well was created to have dominion over, and take care of, the earth. Finally, God created a companion, or helpmeet, for man. This helper was made from Adam's side. The man and woman, being joined as one, are to be the reflection of Christ and the church. CreationThe book of Genesis is the book of the beginnings. It is the foundation of the rest of Scriptures. It is no wonder that Satan, and his workers (2 Cor 11), seek to undermine the literal interpretation of the book. God clearly declares in His Word that He created the heavens and the earth in six 24 hour days (resting on the seventh). All attempts to marry the Biblical creation account with "millions of years" have to eliminate a literal interpretation of God's Word. God literally states that heavens were framed by the Word of God. God literally states that by the Word of the LORD the heavens were made and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. Belief in the Creator God is truly a core value in any true faith.Sun, 12 August 2012

The Call to DiscipleshipThe final command of Christ was His great commission for individual believers to make disciples. This requires great commitment as we turn away from the way the world thinks to the way of the Lord. However, Satan has sought to hinder the call to discipleship with many distractions and deceptions. We must be committed to the plan of God to advance His Kingdom. Sun, 05 August 2012

The Counsel of God, Pt 2Which of these statements more accurately reflects your relationship with God in His Word? "You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God." (Jesus) ... or ... "These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily ..." (Paul/Luke) In the previous message we saw the Biblical illiteracy of American Christians and then began considering the identity and inspiration of the whole counsel of God. In this message the importance and inculcation of the whole of God is considered as we look forward to our seven year project of teaching through the Whole Counsel of God. Sun, 22 July 2012

The Counsel of God, Pt 1There have been numerous surveys performed in the United States to gauge the Biblical literacy of those who claim to be Christians. Sadly, the majority of American Christians do not know basics Bible teaching. The majority of those surveyed either believe that Christ sinned or they were not sure! Paul, in his final address to the elders of Ephesus, proclaimed that he had not shunned to declare to them the whole counsel of God. He then commended them to God and the Word of His grace. For, he stated, after he departed false teachers would arise seeking to draw disciples after themselves. To the Corinthians, he stated that these false teachers would present another Jesus, another spirit, or another gospel. Hence, it behooves those who are disciples of Christ to know His Word and His teaching. Indeed, the Bible is the very inspired, God breathed, Word of God. The Bible contains absolute truth. The Reflection of Christ (The Collective Reflection; Pt 2f: Interactions of the Church, Praying For One Another)Last but not least! This message is the final message in the Focusing on the Christ series. However, as we seek to Focus On and Reflect Christ in this world the need for prayer is critical to the accomplishment of the goal. As a result of our communion, compassion and commitment to one another, we are called as a body to lift up one another in prayer before the throne of God. Could it be that the apathy and lethargy of the American church is due to a lack of faithfulness in prayer? After putting on the entire armor, we are called on to pray! If My people, who are called by My Name, will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land! The Reflection of Christ (The Collective Reflection; Pt 2e: Interactions of the Church, Edifying One Another)As we seek to reflect Christ as a local body of believers, we must continue keep the goal of the assembly at the forefront of our mind. As individuals are to seek to glorify God by being conformed to the image of Christ, so the goal of the local assembly is to glorify God while coming to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. To reach this goal, we are called upon to edify one another. This is NOT just the job of the leaders of the church, rather it is for every member to do their share, causing growth in the body for the edifying of itself in love. The Reflection of Christ (The Collective Reflection; Pt 2d: Interactions of the Church, Receiving One Another)What we say, and how we live, is a reflection of Who is reigning in our heart ... both individually and collectively. The church is called upon to function as a healthy body loving one another, serving one another and bearing with one another. Yet, we are called upon to go to a more proactive posture and that is to receive one another. This message exams the exhortation, exceptions and exhibition of our call to receive one another. The Reflection of Christ (The Collective Reflection; Pt 2c: Interactions of the Church, Bearing With One Another)As we seek to fulfill the commands to love one another and serve one another within the context of the local assembly there will be special people who making loving and serving a little more difficult. It is for those times when we as a body are commanded to bear with one another. Bearing with one another requires self-examination (considering your own imperfections), humility, gentleness and longsuffering. The Reflection of Christ (The Collective Reflection; Pt 2b: Interactions of the Church, Serving One Another)Scriptures tells us that the Greatest Command is to love the LORD your God with all your heart, soul and mind. The greatest expression of our love for God is our service to God (Deut 10:12). Likewise, within the assembly of those who worship God, the greatest expression of loving one another is serving one another. However, serving one another means that we must humble ourselves and lift up others. Their values and their needs must be considered as greater than my own; this is the mind of Christ. The Reflection of Christ (The Collective Reflection; Pt 2a: Interactions of the Church, Loving One Another)As children are a reflection of their parents, so believers should be of their heavenly Father. Just as there are certain character traits that are symbolic of certain families, so there should be of the family of God. That primary character trait should be love. We are told in 1 John 4 that our love is an evidence of true believers. Those who know God will love, those who do not love do not know God. That love will be manifested in our actions as a result of being sincerely present in our hearts. However, we are not commanded to love only those that we like. Rather, we are called upon to love all beleivers including those that we struggle with liking. We need to recall that we love God because He first loved us. God loved us while we were at enmity with Him. When we love one another, we give the greatest reflection of Christ to the world. "By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." 7, 2012 by Bob CorbinSun, 27 May 2012

The Reflection of Christ (The Collective Reflection; Pt 1c: Illustrations of the Church, The Body cont.)The main illustration of the church in the scriptures is the body of Christ. The church, as a body, is made up of many members. In order for the body of Christ to grow biblically it needs to recognize the biblical goal set for it: "till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect (teleion) man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness (plaeromatos) of Christ. ~ This goal can only be reached by each member of the body performing his, or her, role. The body is supposed to be "joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.~ This can only happen if each member is committed to the body. The Reflection of Christ (The Collective Reflection; Pt 1c: Illustrations of the Church, The Body)A primary illustration of the church in Scripture is "the body of Christ." Paul declared to the church of Ephesus that "Christ is the head of the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all." As the Head, He is in charge. The Body should move at His impulse. Sadly, many local churches today are dysfunctional. We need to recognize, as well, that our Head has a charge for His Body: to walk worthy. Our local churches should function in such a way that visitors would clearly know that the assembly is seeking to follow the Lord Jesus. That is accomplished when we seek to walk worthy of our calling to be holy ones in lowliness, seeking to elevate the value and needs of others above our own, and endeavoring to keep a spirit of unity and peace. How does your local church meet these qualifications? This message was presented on May 13, 2012 by Bob CorbinSun, 13 May 2012

The Reflection of Christ (The Collective Reflection; Pt 1b: Illustrations of the Church, The Bride)In the New Testament the church is described, in its relationship with Jesus Christ, as: the building, the bride and the body. Christ, as the bridesgroom, is preparing a place for His bride and will one day return to take her to His Father's home where there will be a wedding supper prepared! Until that time, the church is betrothed to Christ as His bride. The Reflection of Christ (The Individual Reflection; Pt 3d: Our Relationships, Parents)Fathers, provoke not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Biblically, fathers are to be the primary spiritual leaders of their homes. It was predominantly men that Moses was talking to on the east side of the Jordan River when he declared, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind and with all your strength. And the words which I teach you this day shall be in your hearts and you shall teach them to your children diligently whether you are sitting in the house or walking along the way; whether you are lieing down or rising up. Men were to nurture their children in the Word of God. However, that job has be handed over to the mothers and men have become absentee dads. If the church is to become powerful once again a key ingredient will be the repentance and revival of many men who are called by the name of the LORD! The Reflection of Christ (The Individual Reflection; Pt 3b: Our Relationships, The Husband)"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church ..." As women were to reflect the church in its relationship to Christ, so men are to reflect the love of Christ for the church. The love of Christ was first (we love Him because He first loved us), sacrificial, and purposeful. Men, how would you describe your relationship to your wife? How would she describe your love for her? This message was presented on March 11, 2012 by Bob CorbinSun, 11 March 2012

The Reflection of Christ (The Individual Reflection; Pt 3a: Our Relationships, Wife)If Christ is residing and reigning in your heart, then it will be reflected in your words, in your finances, and in your relationships. In Ephesians 5 and 6 we see three primary relationships that we have: marital, parental and occupational. Scripture teaches that the wife is to reflect Christ in her submission to her husband. More specifically, she reflects how Christ believes the church ought to submit to Him. Submission to the husband is a reflection of a wife's submission to Christ. Women, what do you reflect in your relationship to your husband? This message was presented on March 4, 2012 by Bob CorbinSun, 4 March 2012

The Reflection of Christ (The Individual Reflection; Pt 2e: Our Finances, Appropriation)In much of the appropriation of our financial resources, we do not need to make many decisions, we merely pay our bills. However, what is our priority for the surplus of our financial resources? The scriptures teach that we should be postured to give and investing in eternity. What is your view of surplus? Is it extra that God has given you to invest in eternity, or for your own indulgence? How are you glorifying God and reflecting Christ in the appropriation of your financial resources? The Reflection of Christ (The Individual Reflection; Pt 2e: Our Finances, Appropriation)Those who are properly reflecting Jesus in the appropriation of their financial resources will be giving God the first portion and priority. Afterwards, we must consider the taxation requirements of the government and then the needs of our family. An additional consideration in our budgets is our handling of debt. We are told in the book of Proverbs that the borrower is servant to the lender. It should be the goal of every believer to be indebted only to Christ. When we are free from debt then we will be free to serve the Lord wherever and whenever He chooses. Are you free? This message was presented on February 19, 2012 by Bob CorbinSun, 19 February 2012

The Reflection of Christ (The Individual Reflection; Pt 2d: Our Finances, Appropriation)The appropriation of our financial resources is one of the primary reflections of the spiritual reign of Christ in our hearts. Jesus said, "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." In the last message we discussed how God was to be given the first fruit and the first tenth of our finances. As we budget our resources, the next two considerations in the appropriation of our finances should be the government and our family needs. Taxation is a hot topic today. The Bible clearly teaches that we are to give taxes to whom taxes are due. Our truthfulness in handling our taxes is a measure of our integrity before God. Do you cheat on your taxes? Is Christ glorified in your truthfulness? Do you have an operating budget for your finances? Is Christ honored and reflected in the handling of your financial resources? Are you a good and faithful steward? This message was presented on February 12, 2012 by Bob CorbinSun, 12 February 2012

The Reflection of Christ (The Individual Reflection; Pt 2c: Our Finances, Appropriation)Jesus said, "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." How we appropriate the financial resources with which God has blessed us reveals the priority of our heart. The greatest command is for us to love the LORD our God with all of our heart. Hence, God should be THE top priority in the appropriation of our finances as well. The Scriptures reveal that we are to give our first fruits, tithes, and offerings to the LORD. What priority does God have in your budget plan? This message was presented on February 5, 2012 by Bob CorbinSun, 5 February 2012

The Reflection of Christ (The Individual Reflection, Pt 2b: Our Finances, Administration and Acquisition)Jesus said, "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." If Jesus Christ is residing and reigning in your heart then it will reflected in how we handle our finances. If Jesus is the Lord of our finances, then we will recognize that we are to be stewards of the resources which God has entrusted to us. Paul stated, "Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful." There are two main aspects to functioning as stewards: The Acquisition of Financial Resources and The Appropriation of Financial Resources. As faithful stewards of God, we should demonstrate a proper priority, honesty, diligence and contentment in the acquisition of financial resources. Are you a "faithful servant?" The Reflection of Christ (The Individual Reflection, Pt 2a: Our Finances, Principles)What we say, and how we live, is a reflection of Who, or what, is residing and reigning in our heart! If Jesus Christ is residing and reigning in your heart then you will reflect Him in the activities of your life. Jesus said, "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Again, if Christ is reigning in our hearts, then it will be reflected in how we handle our finances. Considering, how Christ is reflected in our finances we need to first consider some overarching Biblical principles: The Principle of Lordship, The Principle of Ownership, and The Principle of Discipleship. Finally, we would look at The Principle of Stewardship. As we consider this important subject, we must answer the question, "Who is the Lord of wallet?" The Reflection of Christ (The Individual Reflection, Pt 1: Our Speech)When Christ is residing in reigning in our hearts, it will be reflected in our lives and our lives become the reflection of Christ. Jesus stated, "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speak." If Christ is reigning in our hearts, then our speech should reflect it. Paul shared with the believers of Ephesus what putting on Christ in their lives would look like. He began by describing the effect it should have upon the way they use their mouths. If we are reflecting Christ, then our speech should be reflecting truthfulness, graciousness, righteousness and purposefulness.
